I am delighted to hear that you are celebrating your 15th birthday and congratulate you all on the effort it has taken to keep the “show on the road”.
CREATE Foundation’s journey with the gang at Freedom Road started at a conference we were presenting at in Oxford. I saw the group perform and was blown away by the young people’s generosity in raising funds for the blind in Sierra Leonne. Ian Bolton and I struck up an immediate bond over our shared commitment to work with young people and ensuring that their lives were enriched by having opportunities to be the best they can be.
We chatted excitedly about how we could work together to get the Freedom Road gang over to “oz” to perform. Of course funding was an issue for both of our organisations so Ian and his crew worked tirelessly to raise funds to make our dream a reality. I can only imagine the work that the young people and crew did to raise those much needed funds.
The gang arrived in Sydney to present at our Summit dinner and stole the show. The whole room was in awe of these larger than life kids who flew all the way from Hull to be with us. Friendships were established, and continue to this day. Since the initial Summit, CREATE has welcomed many members of Freedom Road and staff to come over to our conferences and host our song writing workshop and conference dinner performance.
I’ve had the pleasure of being in Hull many times and catching up with the crew and the young people still come out to see me and often perform. It is a truly humbling experience to hear how their engagement with us at CREATE changed or influenced their lives. It is without doubt that FRCA is a unique and significant organisation that has a committed crew that focusses on creating opportunities for young people. It has been an incredible pleasure being associated with this outstanding group of people and to us Ian Bolton is a LEGEND.
